Electromagnetic Compatibility
1. Conformity with EC-EMC Standards
All Soclair Electronic modules with screw terminal connectors (DIN-rail modules, modules for measurement probes) fulfil the generic standards IEC/EN 61000-4-4 (Burst), IEC/EN 61000-4-5 (Surge) and IEC/EN 61000-4-3 (Radiation).
2. Cabling and Installation Requirements
All cables, with the exception of the power supply, must be screened. This screening must be correctly connected with respect to HF and be at the ground potential of the module, the signal source and signal receiver. A correct HF connection between the screening sheath and ground system would be a thick copper band or braid which is as short as possible, or, even better, a metal connector which shorts the copper braid to the (earthed) casing (e.g., BNC-connector with coax cable). These measures guarantee fulfilment of EMC standards. Metallic screening of the module itself is not necessary (and serves no purpose for isolating transducers with their various galvanically separated components).
Generally, EMC standards are fulfilled by earthing the cable on one side only and sometimes with unscreened leads.
If no screened cables are used then standard interferences must not permanently damage the device under test. However, during the course of the interference tests short-lived errors, larger than those specified under section 3) may be seen at the output.
3. EMC-Error Specification
3.1 General
The errors refer to the output signal (% of final value). The output signal is measured using a digital multimeter (type, 2.5 conversion per second). The test conditions correspond to those laid down in the generic standards 1000-4-x. In most cases no errors can be seen (<0.05%). The error information listed below relates in mainly to worst case situations (e.g., very small measurement ranges).
If screened cable are not used, short term (several ms to several ms, and in very slow modules up to one second) errors can occur which are way above the specification.
For test authorities are comprehensive and detailed test reports available. Please contact us for more information.
3.2 Standard 1000-4-2 (electrostatic discharge)
Error <0.5% at 4 kV in cable screen or 8 kV in air
3.3 Standard 1000-4-3 (field irradiation)
Error <0.5% at 27-1000 MHz, 10 V/m, 80% AM (1 kHz)
3.4 Standard 1000-4-4 (fast transients)
Error <0.5% at 1 kV/<1% at 2 kV at signal leads via capacitive coupling prongs
Error <0.5% at 2 kV at power supply via capacitive coupling prongs
3.5 Standard 1000-4-5 (surge-impulse)
Error <0.5% at 0.5 kV at power supply (differential-mode). Induced via RC-circuit, 42 Ohm impedance, directly at the power supply (not at the screening sheath).
